Sensorial Activities

”The senses are the basic human apparatus for contact between the individual and the world around him.”---Maria Montessori

Sensorial exercises are scientifically designed concrete materials that isolate one particular quality to define abstract concepts (e.g. color, shape, length, sound, smell, texture). For example, the color is the only different quality of color tablets and demission is the only quality different of pink tower.

The sensorial works give children the keys to explore and classify the environment by using their senses. These self-correcting materials prepare children for language learning in both Mandarin Chinese and English, mathematics, geometry, music, art and imagination.

  • Visual Sense materials enhance child’s ability to discriminate the difference between size, color, and shape with similar and differing objects.

  • Auditory sense materials refine child’s ability to discriminate difference sounds in the environment and music work.

  • Olfactory sense materials focus on child’s nose and refine the smelling sense to aware of the odors in the environment.

  • Gustatory sense materials focus on child’s tongue and refine the tasting senses.

  • Tactile sense materials allow children to touch and feel with their hands to refine their sense for texture, pressure, weight, and temperatures.

  • Stereognostic sense materials are combination of the five senses that help child to make recognitions based on his own experiences.

Mathematics Activities

“Children display a universal love of mathematics, which is par excellence the science of precision, order, and intelligence.” -----Maria Montessori

Mathematics is more than counting numbers or mastering the operation skills. It is an expression of the way we live and the basis of all practical things and of imagination.

The mathematics materials are associated with language allow children to first identify the concrete quantity, then the written symbols and the combination of two. These sensorial works (e.g. number rods, sandpaper numbers, decimal system, linear and skip counting, fractions) help children to develop an outstanding mathematical mind with logic, order, cognitive, and imaginative ability.

Science and cultural materials that integrated with the four areas that enhance children to explore geography, art, music, botany, zoology and history.

These hands on activities (e.g. world maps, botany puzzles, flags, continent folders) are the key to the social and physical world. Children learn to appreciate cultural diversity, respect, and tolerance.

Language (Mandarin Chinese & English) Activities

“No one but a child can construct his own machinery and so learn to perfection as many languages as he hears spoken about him”----Maria Montessori

Children develop listening and speaking language skills naturally and spontaneously in our bilingual environment through every day routines, communication with others, and appropriate materials (e.g. stories, poems, songs, and finger plays).

Children develop reading and writing skills in English words and Chinese characters with English and Chinese speaking teachers through multisensory language materials (e.g. sandpaper letters, sandpaper characters, moveable alphabet & characters).
